5 Questions To Ask Before Buying A Storage Shed

Buying a storage shed requires a bit of planning if you want to find something that really meets your needs.  While it can be tempting to buy the cheapest option that catches your eye, you’ll need to consider a few different factors before taking the plunge.  Here are 5 questions to ask before buying a storage shed:

1. Are There Any Restrictions?

Many neighborhoods have restrictions on shed building that can throw a wrench in your plans.  Before you begin, see if there are any restrictions on the type or size of shed you can build.  Also check to see if you need a building permit from the city or approval from your neighborhood HOA.  Some may additionally restrict how close you can build it to property or fence lines.

2. What Am I Using My Shed For?

The purpose of your shed will be a huge factor in what kind of shed you buy.  Do you need a lot of space for a workshop or gardening?  Or is it a simple storage shed that you won’t be spending a lot of time inside?  If you plan on spending a lot of time inside the shed, you’ll need proper lighting, ventilation, and possibly windows or skylights.  If it’s just for storage, make sure your shed contains the features to properly store the equipment you need.

3. How Much Space Do I Need?

It’s always a good idea to plan larger than you need.  While you may currently only have enough equipment to fill a certain amount of space, you could easily acquire more tools in the future that require storage.  Plan for an extra 25% of space to accommodate any extra storage space you need in the future.  Just make sure you don’t run afoul of any neighborhood height restrictions.

4. Which Design Do I Prefer?

The appearance of your shed will play a huge part in the overall appearance of your home.  Try and find something that matches the overall appearance of your property.  Do you want a wooden shed that blends into the landscape?  Or would you prefer something more formal that matches the architectural elements of your home?  Whatever you choose, make sure you buy a shed crafted with sturdy, durable materials.

5. What Foundation Do I Want?

A shed needs to be built on a level surface.  You’ll want to build the shed on either a cement patio, compacted road base, or a pad with compacted gravel.  Make sure the shed isn’t built in a low-lying area, or else you run the risk of water draining into the shed.  If you choose a wooden shed, it may or may not include flooring, so make sure you have a strong foundation if you choose a shed without flooring.

If you take the time to consider each of these factors, you’ll be sure to find a storage shed that perfectly meets your needs.  Make sure to plan ahead to find a storage shed that will last you for many years.
