Should I Buy In-Stock or Custom Furniture?

Visitors to Heritage Amish Furniture quickly realize that Amish custom furniture means quality. The showroom is a delight for the senses. They’re greeted with the woody scents of resin and spice, the temptation of smooth tabletops, and the rich hues of real wood. The furniture is built with beautiful North American hardwoods in styles ranging from Shaker to Mission to modern.

What’s harder to see at first glance are the values behind each piece. The Amish value craftsmanship, economy, and sustainability. These values shape the way they build and sell furniture. Instead of mass-producing items and storing them in warehouses, Amish builders prefer to build pieces as orders are placed. Because of their high standards—and their constant drive to improve—they can easily customize furniture for their customers. So which is better, to buy a piece right off the showroom floor, or make a custom order?

Well, at Heritage Amish Furniture, there are actually three ways of shopping:

  1. buy in-stock pieces from the showroom floor,
  2. order items online, or
  3. request custom pieces through a salesperson or our online custom form.

This article will help you understand each option so you can decide which choice fits your needs.

What Can Be Customized

One of the advantages of buying Amish-made furniture is working with true experts. Their skill allows them to customize nearly every part of a piece. The most common customizations are wood type and stain. Customers can choose from eleven types of wood and a large array of stains—enough combinations to create something unique. Add in custom hardware, dimensions, and fabrics, and the possibilities quickly become endless.

If you can dream it, there’s a good chance the Amish can build it. Our salespeople work closely with the craftsmen to bring your ideas to life. Nearly everything in the showroom can be customized to suit your home.

Is Everything Online in Stock?

Usually, only a small number of pieces shown online are physically in stock, but anything you see can be ordered anytime. While this may seem inconvenient at first, made-to-order furniture offers real value: lower prices, higher quality, and more customization. These benefits come from the way Amish builders work.

The Amish follow a lean manufacturing model. They don’t build massive warehouses or stockpile furniture. Large storage systems would increase overhead, raise prices, and create more opportunities for damage. By building only what’s ordered, they reduce waste, maintain quality, and avoid the need for pushy sales tactics.

Wait Times for Orders

One reason some people shop at big-box stores is the short wait time. Anything bought in-stock can be taken home the same day. But if you place an order, the wait time will be several weeks.  Holidays and certain seasons can also affect the wait time.

As a general rule, here’s what you can expect with Amish-made furniture:

  1. Standard order: 8–12 weeks
  1. Fastest standard order: 6–8 weeks
  1. Longest standard order: 14–16 weeks
  1. Custom order: Add 2 weeks to the standard order
  1. Quick ship: 2–4 weeks

The wait can feel long, but customers often say the quality makes it worthwhile.

Prices: In-Stock vs. Custom Orders

As you might expect, custom orders cost more than in-stock pieces. Builders spend extra time designing and crafting each custom piece, increasing the price.

But that doesn’t mean you should avoid custom furniture. If customizing the number of leaves to your dining table allows you to seat everyone comfortably, you might find the cost worthwhile. If the lift desk accommodates your height without making you stoop, your back will thank you in a week’s time.

Because these pieces are built to last for decades—not just a few years—many people feel the added cost is worth getting exactly what their home requires.

For others, customization might not be necessary. If you’re in that situation, buying in-stock allows you to enjoy lower prices and shorter wait times.

Why do so many people prefer custom furniture, even if it comes with a higher price tag and a longer wait time? Often, it’s because they’re trying to match a new piece to something they already own—like a new table that fits older Mission-style chairs. Maybe you’ve found a table you love and want it in oak. Provide a photo of your chairs, and the builders can match the stain. Or perhaps you’ve seen a photograph of your great-grandparent’s wardrobe and hope to recreate it. Maybe you love a sectional but need different upholstery to provide a pleasant contrast to your curtains.

You can pick your furniture up yourself, but many customers choose our nationwide delivery service for convenience. And if you live within seventy-five miles and spend over $3,000, delivery is on us.

The delivery crew doesn’t just drop off your furniture. They bring it inside, set everything up, and make sure each piece looks just the way it should. They can even move out older furniture if you need the extra hands.
